Dressing The Apple Body Shape

How to dress an apple body shape; the rights and wrongs. This is part 2 of 2. To do you dear reader and this complex subject justice, I had to split this discussion across a second page.

To nip over to page 1 , go to apple shaped body.

An Apple Body Shape Requires
Careful Dressing

This is a because this is a very typical figure in the Western world and amongst big breasted women in particular. Without doubt this is the most difficult of the female body types to dress well. The key issue is the stomach.

On the previous page, I discussed elongating the torso; here I review the idea of creating or emphasizing those curves.

Creating Curves

In fact a good way to think of it, is creating an hourglass. Not because an hourglass figure is better but merely to provide a theoretical framework. These 'new' curves will de-emphasize your tummy and boost your confidence.

The three areas to highlight are therefore:

  1. the shoulders and upper torso,
  2. the waist
  3. the hips.

If you have a big bust, do not worry, this does not automatically mean exposing cleavage. It will obviously provide curves but is not the focus of this discussion.

a) Emphasizing The Shoulders

Drew Barrymore knows how to highlight the shoulders
Drew Barrymore emphasises her shoulders to de-emphasise her apple shape

As Drew Barrymore knows only too well, exposing that big flash of flesh draws the eye eye up. Interestingly she has also accessorized the dress to add emphasis. Catherine Zeta Jones also regularly uses this trick.

Note how this acccentuates the shoulders and upper torso without doing the same to the bust. You can also experiment with detail on high sleeves. However this can highlight your breasts, so be careful. (Take a look at the page sleeve width for more detailed analysis).

Another means of adding bulk at the top of your torso is the turtleneck (or polo-neck for us Brits). Like wide sleeves this has warning signs plastered all over it but if you like the style, try it. Again see the page (turtleneck) discussing this subject in more detail .

b) Emphasize The Waist

This may seem counter-intuitive but emphasize the waist.

Obviously this is a sensitive issue and will require understanding, experimentation and courage. However, take a look at these examples to see how this can be achieved. It is a classic example of fashion smoke and mirrors and is enormously effective.

I try not to overload pages with pictures but this issue is so critical for an apple body type, it justifies it; particularly because each example below tackles it slightly differently.

A) Jennifer Love Hewitt uses a dress with a band of ribbon of the same colour to subtly create a high waistline. This is an alternative to a belted dress.

B) I like this example because the photo shows how the simple use of a ribbon, tied at the right spot, can instantly create the illusion of a waist. I also like this as an example because the scoop neckline is another good choice for the big busted. The only downside to the ribbon is that it is inflexible. I know many ladies with an apple body shape like the comfort of a flexible or elasticated belt.

C) Shar Jackson has a low slung, loose belt with hanging tassles. Ignore the horizontal stripes and polo neck! Belts can cut your body in two, so be careful!

D) Svetlana Medvedeva has a single breasted jacket with a single button cinching the waistline. Note the elongated V shaped neckline.

I devote an entire page elsewhere to the importance of the waistline, how to locate it and emphasize it, which you may wish to take a quick peek at.

c) Emphasize The Hips

Liz Hurley really knows how o work an apple shape

By adding detail at the hips you can create bulk there and draw the eye down, thereby creating the illusion of an hourglass figure. Elizabeth Hurley is an absolute master of dressing an apple shaped body.

Another good method is the ball gown style as demonstrated by Drew Barrymore. Bare shoulders attract the eye upwards, a hint of cleavage does

Detail styles like ruching, side pockets or patterns at the hips all serve a similar purpose to create extra curves.

Apple Body Shape Role Models

Serena Williams always ensure her tennis outfits suit her body shape
Peplum bands are a wonderful friend of apple shapes

I apologise to Serena Williams for using a photo of her whilst playing, (a situation when we cannot possibly be seen at our best) but the Williams sisters are very fashion conscious and you can seen how Serena has cleverly adapted a flared skirt into her tennis outfit to create curves.

Actually Serena Williams is a more than useful role model for the apple body shape. Click on this link to see an analysis of her style and the tricks she uses to flatter her shape.

The other really good role model is the actress Jennifer Hudson. Neither of these ladies is some stick thin Hollywood type and because they are more 'normal' their examples resonate more. It has nothing to do with the fact they are African American, it is simply because they have style.

Another good tip is to wear a jacket that flares out around the hips. The peplum style works well but there are others - experiment. This 1917 picture (above) shows three similar styles but give you an idea how you could create a modern equivalent to flatter that apple shaped body.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan
