The Apple Shaped Body

An apple shaped body is a very typical shape for female body types and probably the most misunderstood. This usually means a wonderfully small bottom, narrow hips and thighs, big boobs, broad shoulders and often shapely legs. All this sounds and is great but ladies of this shape are often very concerned about their full or soft midriffs.

I tried to cram this information all on to one page but could not do the subject justice so this is page 1 of 2 and concentrates on the most flattering clothes and styles for you.

The Best Styles for an Apple Shaped Body

The best clothes for an apple body shape are therefore all the styles that mask that problem tummy and highlight all those very desirable features. Another rarely discussed issue is balancing out the often very slender legs and arms with the fuller torso.

Dressing a apple shaped body is by no means easy but certainly achievable with a careful choice of clothes as you will see. It is certainly not solved by wearing baggy creations - which is the most common mistake.

There are also some fantastic role models such as Jennifer Hudson, Brooke Shields, Serena Williams and Drew Barrymore. Even the glamorous Liz Hurley and Catherine Zeta Jones are very slim versions of this shape.

Tackling The Key Problem Area For
Apple Shaped Women

For all female body types there is one or more major issues to concentrate on. Without doubt the key issue here is that stomach. By the way, that does not necessarily mean fat, as the various celebrities on this page demonstrate.

So, let us explore clothes for a big tummy. There are two principal ways of tackling it.

  1. Elongating the torso
  2. Creating curves - see the other page (link at bottom of page)

(1) Elongating The Torso

A really important issue for ladies with an apple shaped body is length. If you assume for now that your stomach is a big horizontal block, which of course it is not, the way to counter it is to emphasize the vertical; so length matters! This can be achieved by a number of means:

  • A low neck top will elongate the neck and help draw the eye down, particularly the V neckline, (see Liz Hurley below).
  • Similarly single breasted V neck jackets, as opposed to double breasted jackets which broaden (See the lady in the jacket below left). Also, possibly wear the jacket undone as there will then be two parallel vertical lines.
  • Tailored jackets also serve wonderfully to camouflage the breasts. You can wear most lengths but long is good because it elongates and sweeps over the midriff.
  • As an alternative to a jacket, you might consider a cardigan.
  • Vertical stripes. This does not just have to be the pattern, it can be from the jacket as above, a feature central zip, a long scarf draping down, or anything else you can use.
  • Sleeveless works well (as can be seen above and below) as those two long vertical expanses of flesh create more vertical lines which apple shaped ladies need to balance that midriff.
  • The use of one colour is a very simple means of drawing the eye up and down the torso (as is demonstated on every photo on this page). Jennifer Hudson (top right) even uses the same colour tights and shoes to really press the point home.

  • Avoid horizontal stripes and belts on your lower torso as they will emphasize the horizontal and broaden your torso. This is almost the polar opposite to the effect an apple shaped body type would want. If you like belts wear them low and loose / hanging.
  • Emphasize your leg length - see (above top right) how Jennifer Hudson has used patterned tights to accentuate those great pins. High heels will elongate; broad, clunky shoes should be avoided. Long, same colour, even pointed shoes all elongate.
  • Use materials that shape but do not cling around the tummy. Look closely at the material on the tops above, they are creasing slightly, something which could not happen with tight clingy fabric. Cotton and wool is structured without being bulky or clingy.
  • Wear shirts and tops long (see Drew Barrymore above left). Do not tuck them in. Layer them over a camisole or shirt and wear the un-buttoned or semi un-buttoned.
  • For tee shirts see if you can find a slight A shape as in the black shirt Miss Barrymore (above) is sporting. Remember also not to choose a high neckline.

Skirts and Dresses For An Apple Shaped Body

  • Pencil skirts work incredibly well, with or without a belt. Knee length is ideal but do what suits you. High waists can also look good as it floats over your midriff.
  • A really good dress style is the wrap dress (for most female body types), particularly if you have the ability to cinch the waist in as much as you like. It will fit nicely over your breasts, usually in a becoming V neckline whilst draping flatteringly over your middle. Many retailers are aware of this and there is plenty of choice out there.
  • Full skirts, such as A line will make the waist on an apple shaped body look smaller. The A line dress worn by Jennifer Hudson (top right) is also about as good as it gets.
  • Drop waist dresses (where the seam is positioned at the hips rather than the waist) again elongate.
  • Another good tip is patterns on skirts. They distract the eye. drawing the eye down and therefore help balance out the heavier top half. However be careful to pair it with a plainer top.

For all female body types, looking good is principally about wearing styles that suit you.

  • Flared or boot cut trousers will help to bring balance to your shape but avoid high waist trousers as they will add unnecessary bulk.
  • Seek out flat fronted trousers which will flatter your middle. Avoid pleated detail at the front which will add bulk and are not a good look for a woman with an apple shaped body.
  • Avoid trousers which are too tight. Not only will they be uncomfortable but if you have slender legs they will make your top look broad in comparison.

Long Jackets

Now I have to admit I forgot the following issue until I saw these photos of Jennifer Hudson and boy does she carry it off well. Ok - let's go back to the problem, a possibly soft stomach that you wish to deflect attention from. You maybe even feel that it makes you look fat.

So a great remedy is to create a feeling of length as opposed to width. The long line jacket, a frock coat or even a long cardigan, can be a simple but very effective solution. Squint at the photos above and all you will see is those long vertical lines.

I love simple solutions but this is also stylish. I know I keep repeating this but if you have not yet looked at the study of Jennifer Hudson, please take a moment to do so as she really is a master exponent of dressing an apple shaped body.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

This photo of Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson is a wonderful example of how to dress.

I adore the simplicity of this outfit and have never seen her look better.

Actually Jennifer Hudson is a marvellous exponent of dressing an apple shaped body and I devote a very long article to her. Please click the photo above to go to a page dedicated to her.

From the movie - Good Will Hunting

Will: Do you like apples?
Clark: Yeah.
Will: Well, I got her number. How do you like them apples?

A line that has deservedly gone into movie folklore.
