The Best Sports Bras For Big Breasts

The best sports bras, like any big bras, will always be a matter of personal choice and thankfully nowadays there is a fantastic array of exercise bras and running bras for big breasts and boy do we need them.

I will joke about many things to do with big breasts but not this. Be under no illusion the need for a supportive exercise bra is essential.

Most women with big boobs will have, at one point, exercised in an ordinary bra and know that what may work for everyday movement, goes nowhere near far enough for serious exercise.

Best Sports Bras? Today they are called sports bras, exercise bras or high impact bras and are a worldwide phenomena. As you will see the range these days is enormous and can be bought from the internet wherever you live. To prove the point all the high impact bras shown on this page are available at Amazon.

They are primarily expected to be worn under tops but have become so commonplace that they are now often simply worn by themselves.

Unsurprisingly the technology has improved and they are far more attractive and effective than the early Seventies prototypes.

In fact most big busted women are generally happy with the wide choice nowadays. Throughout this page there is a selection of different style exercise bras for you to peruse at your leisure. They come in different makes, styles and prices. I am making no recommendations, when it comes to deciding the best sports bras, it is very personal.

Why The Need For Exercise Bras
for Big Busts?

Max Support Sports Bra for big boobsD + Max Support

(1) Pain - Jane Fonda used to talk about "feeling the burn". How about feeling the pain of bouncing boobs? There are plenty of bountifully supplied women who will hold their breasts, when alone, simply walking naked across a room or upstairs. So when exercising you need serious support.

(2) Sag - The fact is, there is muscle in the breasts but it is deep in the tissue so does not really provide support. The only support comes from Cooper's ligaments and your skin. Both have elasticity but over time, or with excessive exercise, they will become stretched and sag and sadly that is irreversible.

Scientists have studied the movement pattern

Breast movement when exercising

In fact, exercise causes the breasts to move side to side, up and down and around and around. Scientists show the movement as going around in a figure of eight (on it's side).

Almost every busty woman feels back or neck pain at some point and some ladies experience it almost constantly

Unsurprisingly the larger the breast, the greater the potential movement so the best sports bras are of paramount importance to women with big breasts. That said, women with smaller breasts can also experience just as much pain without the proper support.

The other problem is back, neck & shoulders pain created as you try unconsciously to compensate for the lack of frontal support by pulling the muscles in those areas tight.

What Are The Best Sports Bras for Big Breasts

The best Sports bras are principally designed to minimize breast movement, thereby reducing the potential damage to the skin and those chest ligaments. There are two main types;

  1. Formed; This style encapsulates the breasts using a close fitting, seam free, contoured and moulded cup. These are generally perceived as giving a more womanly shape and being more comfortable by being less constrictive.
  2. Compression: These are designed to minimize breast movement by being tight to the point of flattening the breasts. These are considered more effective at minimising movement and by some as more modest by seemingly reducing that mountainous chest.

Both types have advantages and disadvantages. I like to work out in zumba classes and have both types. In fact 90% of the classes will be wearing one or other type. Of course there is always some poor soul who is new to the class bouncing (literally) around without an exercise bra.

Personally I find the formed / moulded cup looks better and are more comfortable but only for lower impact exercise.

The compression type is seriously tight to the point of being uncomfortable but you tend to forget that once the exercise starts and they are still far less painful than bouncing boobs. I think, for high impact exercise, the best sports bras for big breasts are the compression style.

Most supportive exercise bras do not have under-wiring but some do. The very fact that it is designed to be so tight and supportive should negate the need for under-wiring so most ladies choose the non-wire option, but you can find wired versions if you prefer.

Other issues to consider are seams that may chafe; whether you prefer the cross-over (sometimes called racerback) straps at the back; whether the clasps dig in too much.

The only really annoying aspect of this theoretically great range and variety is that many companies still do not go up very high in cup sizes, I mean do they think big stops at DD?. A special mention then to Freya and the Shock Absorber range which actually go a lot higher.

The Best Sports Bras for Big Boobs

Like other brassiere buying decisions it depends on you, the wearer. Some types will feel more comfortable than others. Some ladies can put up with more discomfort than others. Some will value looks, others concentrate on the efficiency.

Do not think that finding the best sports bras is an easy process. It is worse than buying a normal brassiere, it is not as easy as it should be and there is lots of trial and error.

I am not going to recommend any particular brand as I think this is a really personal decision but if you are a seriously busty lady then the first thing you need to do when perusing web sites is to check the cup size availability (drop down box) on any item which catches your eye.

Ascertaining the Best Size Running Bras for Big Boobs

The obvious thing to do is to start with your normal size brassiere but I know many women who reckon normal sizing goes completely out of the window for exercise and running bras.

It is not helped by having to put certain types over your head and pull them down, never much fun but even worse in a changing room. Even more frustrating is that until you start your exercise proper, you will not really know if it is right.

The key factor is the undercup band. Try lifting your arms and gently windmilling your arms to see how it feels. You should not be able to get more than one finger under the band. You will soon see if it feels too tight or if it is loose it will ride up.

Clearly the best sports bras for you are the ones that fit best when you exercise. Their looks are a really secondary factor as most nowadays are acceptable.

One major choice though is the coverage. You will rarely find a lot cut high impact bra for big boobs but there is a lot of variation nonetheless.

Which Sports?

Take into account the sports you will be participating in. Yoga, Tai-chi, walking and rock climbing are very different to step aerobics, running and soccer. Runners in particular need a seriously supportive running bra with all that constant pounding up and down.

I have never asked but suspect horse riders also need to wear exercise bras under that often very smart gear. Yes and that means posh totty do what the rest of us do.

Yes some sports are more demanding than others but you know what is required. Like everything to do with clothes, the best sports bra for big breasts depends not just on your size, but your attitude and the importance you attach to style and comfort.

For the seriously big busted girls, (F+) for whom comfort is all, or more to the point dis-comfort. I would recommend the compression style. You will be stunned by the difference in your silhoutte but also the ability to exercise with much reduced discomfort.

Taking care of Exercise Bras for Big Busts

The experts do say that you need to replace running bras regularly, possibly every six months. Like me, you might be cynical and think this a marketing ploy to sell more but you have to remember they often get used a lot, get really sweaty and consequently get washed a lot.

I suppose it all depends how often you use them, how careful at washing you are and the quality of the bras themselves but it something to be mindful of.

The manufacturers often advise against tumble drying. Elastic does go brittle and if the garment starts to fray, pill or chafe it is a warning sign the material is losing it's elasticity and may be coming to the end of it's useful life.

Actually the Enell high impact bra shown above right is favoured by Big boob actress Christina Hendricks. As most singers and actresses do serious daily workouts to retain their trim figures, I guess her opinion is actually genuinely useful.

The History Of Exercise Bras

In days of yore, the only alternative when playing sport was to bind 'em tight. It used to be fairly common for big busted women to wear at least two bras at the same time, to try and get some support. Most women with ample boobage either accepted pain or refrained from sport wherever possible.

Exercise bras are a relatively modern concept from the 1970's and we can only thank our lucky stars we have what was not available to women less than fifty years ago.

SO who should we thank? I am sure that there are many deserving people but the big guns were:

  1. The Inventors - When I first read about an American woman who sewed together two male jock-straps. I put this likelihood alongside the urban myth that Otto Titsling invented the bra. However apparently it was true. So a big thank you to Lisa Lindahl, Polly Smith and Hinda Schreiber for their jogbra. Also to Renelle Braaten, (originally a Montana hairdresser) and Heidi Fisk for their exercise bra.
  2. The Academics - Christine Haycock (associate professor of surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). Later Dr. Joanna Scurr of the University of Portsmouth, England. Also Deirdre McGhee of the University of Wollongong, Australia. All principally measuring breast movement of women running on treadmills.
  3. The Scientists - C.L. Sandquist and Joseph Shivers at Du Pont who came up with a synthetic (man-made) fibre called polyurethane - polyurea copolymer which they named spandex. Silly Fact - spandex is simply an anagram of 'expands'. In England we tend to call it lycra and in Europe it is elastene and the various national spellings thereof.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Do you sometimes feel your breasts are getting in the way of your sports activities?

The Best Exercise Bra For Big Boobs Must Give Firm Support

Impact Sports Bra for big boobsEnell

When you exercise, the constant vigorous movement of your breasts would be not only damaging but unbelievably painful without a supportive exercise bra.

If you are interested, there is a link to this style at the bottom of the page.

I am not sure too many busty ladies are runners!

A clever ad campaign once stated, when you play tennis, the only thing you want to bounce are the balls.

Yes skipping sounds good in practice but for big busted women?

My personal tip for the best sports bras?

Get one with two straps and sets of hooks at the back. It just seems to give so much more control.

A Cheap Alternative

Now I have never tried the above items and I would be staggered if they provide the same support as the other exercise bras for big boobs featured on this page but they are cheap.

I suspect many ladies use these as comfort bras, sleep bras or for wearing around the home.

They do get surprisingly good reviews on Amazon. So maybe they might suit your purposes.

A New Contender

I have to say I had never heard of this one before. It is advertised as the 'shockingly unshocking' exercise bra and is available in a variety of colours.

As I keep saying, it is impossible to state categorically which are the best sports bras for big breasts. There are so many facets to this issue - just go with what matters to you.

Now I cannot say I have tried this one myself but the Glamorise sport bra above does get a staggering number of good reviews on the Amazon site. In fact, the one I showed at the top left of the page, has even more reviews!

I note it generally only goes up to a cup size F which is a drawback but it may be worth checking out. (If you are interested click the above picture for the UK version or the text link below for the North American site.)
