Big Bust Bras - Ten Tips

Women who wear big bust bras, definitely need an excellent fit. Buying bras for big breasts should not be a quick fire operation unless you know exactly what you want.

Think of the hours your brassiere provides in dutiful employment for you; in the dark and under serious pressure. You simply cannot rush the process.

Face facts, big bras are not cheap so when you buy one you must ensure it is suitable, not just pretty.

A brassiere used to be called a foundation garment and that is the perfect description. Big bust bras are the foundation stone of every bountifully blessed woman's look. It is also an engineering marvel, a fountain of youth, a loyal supporter and something close to your heart.

'A full cup must be carried steadily' - English Proverb

Okay I know the quote was probably referring to drink, but I think it works well here too.

Below I discuss the 10 Tips for ensuring a Good Fit for large bras.

The Difference,
With and Without a Big Bust Bra

A big bust Braless
A big bust bra - see the difference!

As you can see, this is the same model in a similar-ish pose. In one she is wearing a big bra, the other she is not wearing anything. What I want you to look at is the slope of her chest on the left. Look also at where her elbow is in relation to her bust.

The pictures are not ideal for comparison sake but look at the elbow on the photo on the right. Even with her elbow raised her bust is still higher. My point? For women that wear big bust bras, the difference a good fit can make to your overall silhoutte is massive.

Fit Factors for Big Bras

Please find below my 10 key pointers for a good fit in big bust bras:

  1. On the hook? Before you start, you must ensure you fasten the brassiere on the loosest hooks or clasps. Bras will naturally stretch over time so you will end up using the closest hooks but you certainly do not want to start that way.
  2. A level playing field: The most obvious place to start checking is by ensuring your bra band is horizontal all the way around. The brassiere is designed to be worn like this and should stay that way when you lift your arms.
  3. Hoist the colours: You want your bra to lift your bust so it is horizontal to the ground. Ideally it should be situated half way between your shoulder and elbow, or in line with your biceps. This can vary a little with frame and the length of torso but it is a good general rule.
  4. One finger good, two fingers bad: The underband should be taut. Remember 80% of the stress is taken by the band so it needs to be tight. You should only be able to push one finger up under the band at the front or sides, although possibly two at the back.
  5. The only time you need to hear the words, Flat chest? The centre-piece (or gore) sits flat against your sternum (breast-bone). The two exceptions are for women with very closely set boobs and it also may not work with a minimizer bra.
  6. A nice cuppa. Your boobs fit perfectly in the cups. They should not spill out over the top (unless possibly it is a balconette or half cup style), bulge underneath, or to the sides. Equally, there should be no gap between the top of the cup and the breast. For women with large cup bras for big breasts any spillage is amplified.
  7. Wire in the blood: Similar to the above, the underwiring of large bras should encircle the bosom, at the sides, the middle and underneath. It should fit the crease under your boob. If it digs in at all, at the cleavage or under the arm, it is no good and will only get worse.
  8. A strapping lass: You should be able to push two fingers under the strap below your shoulder. It is not meant to be really tight. Only 10-20% of the 'load' is taken by the straps. When there is too much load you can get serious marks and indentations in your shoulders.
  9. Slip sliding away: The straps should be vertical (unless the bra is designed differently). The straps are part of the design to keep your bust positioned in the optimum place. You do not want to see the strap slipping as it is failing to give correct support. If you are sure everything else is correct, you can adjust them.
  10. I am struggling for number 10! Any suggestions for a factors in a good fit in a large brassiere or bras for big breasts would be welcome. See the suggestion box at the foot of the page.

Large Bras Are Not Handbags!

Bras are not handbags

Oh and please avoid tucking a mobile (cell) phone in there, or your brassiere will become mis-shaped. All brassieres should be respected and looked after. You need it to keep it's shape, to help you keep yours.

It is not an alternative handbag.

Well Fitting Big Bust Bras Will Position You Perfectly

Kimberly Kardashian
The ever graceful Svetlana Medvedeva

Where you brassiere 'sites' your boobs is important. You almost want them to jut out. I particularly like the photo of Svetlana Medvedeva because even though she is sitting down, you can see her bust is correctly situated. A good example of well fitting big bust bras.

As for Miss Kardashian, ignore the turtleneck top and look only at the excellent bust position. Don't be put off by the tight fitting material which accentuates her breasts, the point is the bust is in the right place.

Oh how I dream of lovely girly bras that actually are beautiful, hold up the world and don't cost me a boob and a leg. Being around a 46J/K it seems …

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Putting on a Good Front

It may seem obvious but a good fit is very important in a big bust bra. Not only will it give the correct support, it will improve your posture, shape and the lines under your top.

Good fit big bust bras

Fitting a Bra

A good fit makes all the difference to your profile. Take a look at the following two pictures of Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton - the bra model 1

Above, her bust is sited near her elbows; clearly not a good fit.

Hillary Clinton - the bra model 2

In this outfit, she got it right. You can immediately see the difference; a far more feminine and structured shape.

...and no, I did not do any cynical picture manipulation...you know the type, before and after...the 'before' bad look, slumped, unwashed hair, no make up, unsmiling etc.

Then, hey presto, you try on the new superdooper whizzo product and in the 'after' picture your hair shines, the lighting is better, your posture is better etc.

These were simply the best photos I could find. I just thought it provided a good example of the difference the right brassiere can make to one's profile. For women in big girls bras the issue is even more pertinent.

Expecting a political jibe? Nope, I am British so I do not deem my knowledge sufficiently informed to pass comment. Not that I would, this site is for and about women, not politics.

Big Girls Bras

I like this description. In Britain we have always referred to women as girls (in a very friendly manner). I have seen and experienced that Americans are not comfortable with this term.

However many American women happily call their boobs, their girls. So for completely different reasons, the term 'big girls bras' also works really well.

The Big Bra Hunt

Oxfam bra appeal

For any British readers. Oxfam launched an appeal for 'forgotten' bras. You simply had to take them to your local Oxfam shop.

Essentially they collected them and shipped them to Senegal to be sold by women's collectives to provide employment for disadvantaged women and profits for the charity's work in the region.

As one of the spokespeople Helen Mirren says, "I'm sure that many women have a number of bras stowed away untouched for years".

Bras are complex to manufacture so very few developing countries have the facilities to make their own.

This means that second hand bras are a valuable commodity and one of the most desirable items of clothing in West African second hand clothing markets, particularly (because of their scarcity) bras for big breasts.

Unfortunately it looks like this wonderful cause is no longer going.
