Brains Or Breasts
What Do Men Prefer?

Brains or Breasts? There is a huge raft of reports with headlines stating men prefer brains over big breasts as stated by an eminent academic, Professor David Bainbridge. Immediately the headline not only caught my eye but annoyed me enough to read the article.

Brains or BreastsYes Ladies, this is supposedly what it all boils down to

Of course the provocative headline was meant to get us reading but as usual, once you actually read a little more into it, the story was a classic case of bending the truth.

It will come as no surprise to anyone with a brain that this was merely a journalist re-working what the learned professor was actually saying to provide a titillating (yes it is a deliberate pun) headline.

Professor David Bainbridge

So who is David Bainbridge and should we care about his views on either brains or breasts? (drop down to the next section if you wish to get to the actual argument, or read on if you are interested in his credentials.)

Well (according to his own website) he is a Cambridge University Professor of Clinical Veterinary Anatomy. He studied to be a vet at Cambridge University and went on to join a private veterinary practice.

He went back into academia and studied for a PhD at the Institute of Zoology and then did post doctorate at Oxford University at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, lectured at the Royal Veterinary College before moving back to Cambridge.

Brains or Breasts?

Men prefer Brains over big breasts, or so a whole bunch of articles that have picked up on his book suggest. But of course this is just journalists seeing what they want to see and creating provocative headlines.

  • "Forget boobs and long legs: what men really look for in women. Men choose intelligence when picking a life partner above everything else, research suggests" (Daily Telegraph)
  • "Men favour brains over breasts, professor claims" (Gloucester Echo)
  • "Men choose intelligent women over ones with big breasts, professor claims" (Metro)
  • "Men prefer brains over breasts when searching for future wife claims top scientist" (Mirror)

So is this true? Or, more to the point, is it what the Professor said? Well he has written 6 books, in his own words, "one about the brain, one about X chromosomes, one about pregnancy, one about teenagers, one about middle age, and now one about female curves." (www.davidbainbridge.org)

It is the publicity circus around his latest book, Curvology, The Origins and power of female body shape which is causing the stir.

So is this book all about the brains or breasts argument? Hardly.

If you would actually like to read the book, here is a choice of 3 different web retailers.

I am sure somewhere along the line he mentioned something about the brains or big breasts theme, possibly even in a press conference sound bite but it is not exactly the main thrust of his analysis.

The 10 chapters deal with; Where women’s bodies came from; Where women’s bodies come from; The power of curves; What men want and why it doesn’t matter; Trapped in a vessel of flesh; Comfort and discomfort eating; A malaise of shapes; Following the fashion; Covering up and tucking in; Why women care and why it’s complicated.

So not exactly brimming with brains or breasts theories, is it?

Now whilst the book is primarily a discussion on 'why the human female is the only female animal to have curves and how these curves rule our lives, by influencing not only sexual selection but also social hierarchy and self-image.' I am sure somewhere along the line, Professor Bainbridge did make some comment on the subject of brains vs breasts, but the headlines are blowing it all out of proportion.

Actually he was making the point that men chose intelligent women as potential partners as they are likely to be responsible mothers. This thought process trumps, long legs, shapely bottoms or big breasts.

Although he does state that men like curvaceous women as this is linked to the thought process that they will be able to carry babies better. In fact, he spends far more time on the subject of shapely bottoms than he does on boobs.

Do Men Prefer Big Breasts Or Brains?

I have no problem with men prefering brains to boobs, in fact I would prefer it but there are a number of things about this distortion of what the good professor said which annoy me. Why is it that there is this always this implication that big boobs are the polar opposite of brains?

Why is it seemingly that there is no possibility that a woman with big boobs cannot be intelligent? In fact, with the number of adult women in the UK now wearing a size D cup, or above, approaching 40%, it is a very sizeable part of the female population that is being dumbed down.

I really should get off my high horse. I could be equally indignant that it is only curvaceous women that men supposedly fancy, or indeed that men only go for brains. This is so clearly nonsense. The one thing that is obvious in this world is that everyone's tastes differ and we really should count our lucky stars that this is so.

I am sure the good professor does not care about the distortions of his theories on curvaceousness being whittled down to a brains or breasts argument, after all it is all good publicity for his books.

Rant over.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan
