The Inverted Triangle Body Shape

The inverted triangle body shape, sometimes called a lollipop shape usually has long legs, a slender figure and big boobs. Of all the female body types, this is perhaps the shape many women envy and most men lust over.

But if you are a 'lucky' enough to have been born with these genes, you will know only too well, being able to dress in a modest manner for day to day wear is very difficult.

Laura San Giacomo is a great study for ladies with inverted triangle figures, particularly if you are quite short

Many women will simply be unable or unwilling to sympathise with your clothing difficulties. However, it really can be very difficult knowing how to dress so that you are taken seriously, not just continually seen as a vamp. Plus the ongoing problem with tops that do not fit!

The actress Laura San Giacomo (above) is a typical inverted triangle body shape. She has big boobs, slim hips, a flat stomach and slender legs.

I always get the feeling she wants to be taken seriously for her acting abilities and therefore tries her best to hide her figure for fear of being categorised only for her sex appeal. Sound familiar?

The whole psychology of the intelligent woman who is an inverted triangle shape would take some serious column inches, suffice to say, the frustration of being mistaken for an airhead bimbo is something such ladies dread.

I mean where does it say big boobs equals no brains? It can only make you wonder at the intelligence of anyone that determines that the higher the bust size, the lower the IQ.

But fret ye not. Help is at hand. As I hope to demonstrate below, you can smoulder when the occasion allows it, or dress demurely; it is just a matter of knowing what to wear.

How To Dress The Inverted Triangle Body Shape

Many of you will probably feel like you have two zeppelins strapped to your chest which enter the room ten seconds before you do. If you are happy with that, no problem, you do not need any advice as of all the female body types this is the one where it is more than simple to make an impression.

However, assuming you wish to be seen as something more than a pair of breasts on legs, you may well wish to de-emphasize your chest and draw attention to your other features. Thankfully this whole site is choc-a-bloc with advice on this very subject, so have a good look around.

There are two key issues:

(A) Balancing the figure

For a lollipop body shape the main benefits come from creating a balanced outline, or in plain English reducing the emphasis on your boobs by deliberately drawing attention elsewhere.

In practice this means,  you need to subtly broaden the hips and shoulders and also accentuate the waist.

  1. The shoulders
  2. The waist
  3. Below the waist

(B) De-emphasizing the bust

(A1) Shouldering The Burden

By emphasizing your shoulders you can draw the eye up away from your chest.

Many inverted triangle body shapes have wide shoulders, well at least in comparison to their hips, which helps create curves. However many worry about drawing too much attention to their shoulders.

Remember they are probably not broad and beefy, merely wide. Generally it is okay if it is naked flesh but beware of too much detail at this level. If shoulders are a concern, check out the page - wide shoulders.

If you do not have wide shoulders, you can try jackets with shoulder pads although not the 1980's style bat wings.

subtle alternative is wide lapels, or wide collars, particularly with a V neckline. The lapel is just above the line of the breasts and takes the eye up and out. It is all about creating curves which do not involve your boobs.

(A2) Inverted Triangles Should Get Waisted

Highlight that stomach, it will draw the eye down from your chest
Cinch in that waist to accentuate an hourglass look

Possibly the least understood and most subtle weapon in your armoury is that waist.

  • You can wear belts or dresses with defined waistbands to draw attention to that small waist with your torso curving into it from above and below.
  • An alternative is to cinch in the waist using the buttons of a jacket; as modelled by Angelina (section A1 above) in the cream jacket.
  • If you are very brave you can even go for a crop top and bare the midriff (see below).
  • Utilise jackets where the hem line sits on the waist. The horizontal line will emphasize the waist (see Angelina below).
  • An inverted triangle body shape should probably avoid chunky knitwear as it will add bulk to your top half.
  • I know I have used the picture of the red dress below twice on this page but there is a reason. It is nigh on perfect for the lollipop shape. Great neckline, bare shoulders, cinched in waist and flared skirt.
A simple belt can emphasise the waist
This might be over-emphasising the waist

(A3) Below The Waist

  • The perfect skirt for an inverted triangle body shape is an A line as it flares out from your hips.
  • Fluted or Tulip skirts are a wonderfully subtle means of creating a curve, albeit in an unusual spot. Your slender legs will still look good but there is now some bulk below the waist.
  • Pleated skirts also add bulk below the waist in a wonderful way. The pleats will help the skirt sway in a graceful manner.
  • Bold patterns can also be effectively used to draw the eye down, Plus you can wear plain (slimming) black on top as a contrast.

  • Peplum details can create an illusion of hips
  • With trousers / pants try detail at the hip. Side pockets and pleats are simple but effective features (note the pockets on the skirt above). Avoid flat fronted and high waists. Also pockets at the back can create an illusion of more bulk on your butt.
  • Also avoid a cut that is too tight or skinny as you are in danger of looking like a lollipop.
  • Boot leg jeans and trousers flare below the knee and like the flute above, subtly create added bulk / curves.

It is somewhat ironic that women of almost every one of the female body types worry "does my bum / ass looks big in this?" and yet here I am suggesting you actually add curves around your bottom. However, as I hope I explained above, this can be achieved subtly without making your bum / ass look big too.

(B) Tops Too Tight?
The Biggest Problem For Inverted Triangle Body Shapes

A familiar problem? Small frame and big boobs
Another daily problem for lollipop shaped women

The main issue for a woman with an inverted triangle body shape is finding tops that fit both your big bust and that small waist. There is a genuine lack of tops for you. Tops tend to either fit well over the breasts but billow like a sail beneath, or alternatively fit your tummy but your breasts strain the material or burst over the top.

Take a moment to have a look at the page on shirts for big boobs as it is particularly pertinent for lollipop shape women.

Fortunately the clothing industry is cottoning on (oops) to the fact that there are many different body shapes out there and more retailers are offering tops for big boobs with different bust sizes.

There is a wealth of information across this website on the issue of de-emphasizing the bust so please take the time to look as I could not possibly begin to do the subject justice on this page.

Tops To Fit A Lollipop Shape

The surplice or cross-over neckline is often a good look for an inverted shaped body

There are a number of retailers now offering shirts that are tailored specifically to fit a big bust. You will love the lack of straining, gaping and bursting such shirts offer (obviously wear a bra that does not show through). One of our site sponsors is Bounteous which specialises in tailored shirts for busty women.

Also, wear a neckline that suits you. V necks, scoop necks, square necks, sweetheart necklines are all good but there are others too.

A lollipop body type should generally avoid high necklines which will usually mean a large wide expanse of material body across your chest which will draw the eye to your bust. A wrap dress is often an excellent choice.

Flattering Dresses For Inverted Triangle Figures

You will find lots of good examples of celebrities who have an inverted triangle body shape wearing monochrome dresses, in fact see the right hand column for some examples. These ladies not only have the money to look good but have stylists who know what they are doing.

As many entrepreneurs will tell you, you do not need to invent something new, merely take a good idea and re-work it. With this, I would advise simply experimenting with colours that you know suit you.

The strapless look can also work for you as all that naked flesh will drag the eye up from your chest but if you are concerned you have broad shoulders I would try a different option.

Jackets To Suit A Lollipop

An inverted V shape jacket how appropriate!
Once again Angelina Jolie shows how a lollipop shaped woman can dress in a business situation

I just love this concept. A V shape that goes the other way. It is exactly opposite to your shape and therefore, oh so subtly draws the eye down from that bust. How clever is that! Here are two alternatives.

Oh and it is not that clear in the picture (it looks like a crease) but there is a trim across the hips on Angelina's dress. Something I was discussing in section A above. Also note how her jacket hem sits on and draws attention to her waist. Subtle I know but quietly effective.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Slim and busty

Being young, slim and busty will mean lots of attention. That may be good sometimes but it is useful to know how to 'dress down' to avoid it too.

I have to say I was amused to read the latest term connected with this body shape.

What Are You Moaning About?

Well, some estimates put the pear body shape as being 60% of the adult female market. So guess who the traditional clothing manufacturers cater for?

Pears are small on top and big on the bottom (quite lliterally), so exactly the opposite to you. And that, in a nutshell, sums up why you often struggle to find clothes to fit.

So ladies with an inverted triangle figure actually have good reason to feel a tad miffed.

"Sweeter than candy on a stick,
Huckle berry, cherry, or rye,
If you have a choice you fill your pick,
But Lollipop is mine... "

Lyrics from the pop classic Lollipop
