The Keyhole Dress is a Good Choice if You Like Being Unique

The keyhole dress is undoubtedly an adaptable and an uncommon style. It can look good, or very bad. If you like unusual styles or simply like to ensure you are wearing something different then this maybe a good option. However, for busty women it can look good or awful so it is useful to understand a little about the keyhole neckline.

What is a Key-hole Neckline?

A keyhole can provide a nice feature to break up a top

Essentially a keyhole dress or top has an opening at the front of the dress, although as you will see below there are a lot of keyhole back tops too. It can come in a variety of guises. It can be a simple slit, but usually refers to a circular, tear-shape or oval opening.

This gap is normally located centrally to be symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing but can look effective when offset too.

On the right the skater dress with the pink contrast stripe and piping has a nice round central aperture. By contrast, the 'lie down tiger' midi dress, has a less conventional, bigger but still symmetrical shape hole.

Now I have to admit I am no fan of polo / turtle necks for all the reasons I discuss elsewhere (turtleneck) but I wanted to show this picture as a sweater dress is another useful variation on the theme.

The other picture is a contrast dress with three keyholes at the neckline which are very eye catching.

An Offset Keyhole Dress

Offset Keyhole necklines can work really well too

As you can see the offset, or asymmetrical neckline dress is quite stylish. It is certainly different and if you want to be unique at a party, this is certainly a style for you to consider.

It Can Be a Shallow Or Deep Opening

As you can see, the keyhole neckline can be deep or shallow. These two examples are very small and subtle. It just shows how adaptable and varied this style can be.

A Halterneck Variation

When combined with a halterneck detail, the front lends itself perfectly to an aperture and you can get some very interesting variations. On the left is a choker style. Combined with the cut out shoulders and eye catching pattern it is very striking.

The LBD on the right is a fixed cross halterneck, bodycon keyhole dress.

Both these styles would probably suit a generous bust because there is a fair bit of naked flesh on show but not too much boob. Of course the sleeveless look helps. So this ticks the box for 'dresses for big busts'.

A Variation to Avoid

Hello Boys!

I do not even know where to start with this. I know I am stating the obvious but this keyhole dress draws attention to your chest. This is generally something a large busted woman wants to avoid.

As I have explained in the pages on the best dresses for large boobs, it is usually good to show a fair amount of flesh. But here, as you can see, there is an exception to every rule.

She may as well pin a target on her chest. Of course women are no mugs and she knows exactly what she is doing and the reaction this keyhole dress will have; with both men and women. The question you have to ask yourself is, do you want that reaction?

A Keyhole Neckline Blouse

A very modest keyhole aperture

Shirts and blouses: It is unusual to find shirts with a keyhole neckline as above (left); however I think it looks good. It is certainly unusual. You will rarely find a shirt but there are plenty of blouse choices with the smaller aperture, as shown.

The Keyhole Back Top

Keyhole back dresses can provide a modest but saucy touch
Keyhole back tops are a common feature of sportswear

As I alluded to above, the aperture can also be at the back of a top or keyhole dress. We all tend to forget about the rear view but this can be a nice feature. A keyhole back is common on exercise tops; primarily to allow the skin to breathe. It is also a style found on swimming costumes and quite popular on wedding dresses.

The only thing you really need to think about is where the bra band sits as you probably do not want it showing.

A Note of Caution

The problem with a large aperture at the front is obvious on a keyhole dress. Less obvious is the problem with a smaller keyhole opening. You may well get men angling their heads like nodding dogs to try and get the best angle for a line of sight into your cleavage. Just be aware.

Of course, an opening at the rear can also expose a bra strap so try and keep that in mind when buying a keyhole back top.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Flattering Necklines For Big Busts

I have been overwhelmed by the interest and kind words of so many readers on this issue that I decided to write a Quick Guide, Kindle book on the subject (see above).

This has allowed me to write a concise guide on the most flattering neckline styles and expand a little on others.

I will try and create it in different formats but currently it is in kindle ebooks format only.
