Large Bras - Why Are You Wearing The Wrong Size ?

The following affects all women, not just the large bras community. It is difficult to miss the statistic that 70-80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size because the media and manufacturers just love to remind us.

However we can learn from understanding the main reasons why so women are getting it wrong.

I have never liked this statistic because it implies that women are stupid which is insulting towards our gender and plainly not true.

All busty women from the moment they don one of their first big bust bras are very aware of the fit and the look created.

Before I get onto the reasons why so many of us are wearing the wrong size, some general thoughts:

Badly Fitting bra
Wrong Size Bra
  • I am not recommending any big bra in particular but I do list all the brands of genuine large cup bras in a link in the column on the right.
  • A personal pet hate is when I go to websites that are supposedly for plus size bras and the models they use are clearly of less generous proportions. Hence throughout this site I always try to illustrate with pictures of ladies in genuinely large bras.
  • I have sprinkled a selection of large bras shown throughout the page from a variety of specialist manufacturers. Partly to simply make the page more attractive and partly to demonstrate that there are genuine choices out for big busted women.
  • I have also added links for some of the best online retailers. If you fancy one, click the link and it 'should' take you there.

The Many Reasons For The Wrong
Big Bras Size:

I always darkly suspected it was a marketing ploy to get us to buy more big bust bras. So what is the truth behind this oft trotted out phrase? It is not exactly scientific is it? How far out must a measurement be, to be glibly classified as the wrong size brassiere?

I think you will be very comforted to read the following because there are a whole host of 'normal' reasons you may be wearing the wrong size bra at any one time.

  • Familiarity: You wear big bust bras and like your dress size, you have a size fixed in your mind. Perhaps the number one problem is over-familiarity. We remember a dress, or large bra measurement in our mind and tend to think that is it; whereas of course it will change over time. This one I am prepared to accept is genuinely our fault.
  • Weight: Changes in weight will often mean a change in bra cup sizes. Some women are blessed with a constant shape that they are happy with. Many more of us strive for a slimmer profile and our weight and breast shapes and sizes will fluctuate with that changing weight. That can vary daily, leading to guess what? The wrong bra size apparently.

  • The moon: It is often overlooked but our boobs can even change during our monthly cycle so is it any surprise that bra cup sizes are often wrong on any given day? Some women can add two inches or more during their cycle and are advised to use different cup sizes during the month.
  • Breast shapes: Because we do not spend our days staring at pictures of naked breasts most women are unaware quite how much breast shapes vary. Two women with the same (correct) bra size can get a completely different fit and much of this is actually to do with breast shapes In fact because this is such an important and misunderstood issue I have devoted an entire page to it, see breast shapes.

  • Pregnancy: Again screamingly obvious but worth mentioning that bra cup sizes will almost certainly vary considerably.
  • Heat: If you were slightly shocked to realise your bust can change size during the month you are going to be bowled over when you realise a bra can change shape during the day. Why? Science. As your body warms up your brassiere can actually change size too. The molecules in the fabric expand and drift apart with increased heat.
  • Hooks: Another smaller reason is also an ignored issue - the hooks. On most large brassieres there are often a sequence of 2 or 3 pairs of hooks. When you put your bra on, how often do you just settle for the first hook that you get? I admit I often do. The difference between the first and last hooks varies but can be almost an inch. An extra inch can be a significant amount of extra support, or a useful extra breathing space. However, it can suddenly mean you are wearing the wrong bra size.

  • Frequency: Another reality is that most women rarely get measured properly. You may have been measured ‘properly’ but how long ago was it? Within the last twelve months? Probably not. I will look at the whole issue of measuring on another page but if you wear large bras, it is important to get it right to ensure you get the right support.
  • Manufacturers: Another issue the manufacturers ignore, is actually their fault! Different brands have different measurements so you could easily be a 32H in one make but a 34F in another. That is hardly your fault is it? But guess what we get the implied label of stupidity for wearing the wrong brassiere size. Plus of course, there is the international large bra size variation just to make life a little less easy.
  • Styles: You may well be a 30F in a balconette bra by Freya but 30G in a Freya strapless bra. Why? because of the shape of your boobs. The much overlooked issue of breast shapes means that you fit certain styles of bra differently.

  • The laundry; Your bigger bras will often change shape in the wash. There is probably not a woman alive who has never shrunk clothes in the washing machine. It is a sort of obvious error when it is a woollen you shrank, but far less obvious when it is a brassiere. It may be barely noticeable but you have now perhaps unknowingly created the wrong size brassiere. So take care of those large bras and hand-wash them if you can, put them in one of those laundry bags, or at least try them on a lower setting.
  • Measurers: A slightly different problem is of course the fact that different 'professional' measurers actually give you different and conflicting advice. How about that as a ready made reason women have the wrong brassiere size! I have always suspected that whatever rules the measurers used in the past have been torn up and thrown away, as the old fitting a bra guidelines used to invariably mean a bigger band measurement. It seems more and more prevalent these days that women are being re-classified as a lower band size but bigger cup measurement and suddenly have a better fit. You may walk out of a shop a 30F, as opposed to the 34D when you walked in and you will feel the difference in fit and support immediately. Some women will attest that the improvement is almost life changing.
  • and for the really cynical - lies: Some people assert that shop assistants were 'persuaded' to sell the wrong size bigger bras because the stores lacked the stock of bigger cup measurements and wanted to make a sale. If you think about it, stores did not used to have the stock of large cup bras. If you were a 32G, your cup measurement is the same as a 34F, or a 36E. Can you see the logic? Although it was actually the wrong sized bra, you walked out with the perfect cup size and although the band was too big, if it was new it would be taut and you may not have realised it was too loose. Thankfully there is a larger range freely available today.

Correctly Fitting Large Bras

As I said above, perhaps we are wearing the large bras of the wrong measurement at any given moment, but is it really a surprise? You are probably not wearing exactly the right size shoes either. What matters with bras is that you get the right support.

If you are wearing the wrong bra size a correctly fitting bra can make a phenomenal difference. If it is only slightly wrong, it is not ideal but hardly the worst thing in the world. Of course for big busted women, a poor fit may be more pronounced.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Certainly a lady who requires bigger bras but here are clear indications of the wrong size. It would not take too many hours for this to become incredibly uncomfortable and hurt your back.
