Layered Tops

Layered tops for women are a wonderfully simple way to create different effects. These garments normally incorporate certain layering techniques which saves you the trouble of combining two garments to make the same effect.

Flattering shirts, blouses and tunics are always important and these can be a very useful addition to a curvy clothing wardrobe as they suit many types of body shape.

These tops for women are fabulous if you like to be different as they tend to be unusual.

What Is A Layered Top?

A layered top is almost any form of top that combines two or more styles within the same garment or uses the material in such a way as to suggest it is actually more than one top.

The best way to illustrate this concept is to provide plenty of examples. As you will see from the various photos on this page, these tops come in many formats, colours, styles and textures.

There are two principal types:

  1. When the top itself is a series of layers
  2. Where the top gives the illusion that it is actually two garments

(1) Layered Tops - A Series of Layers

With these two layered tops for women you can see that the main feature is a series of bands in a ruffle tiered design. Indeed this style is often described as tiered. This does not provide an illusion of two garments but literally creates a series of layers.

Each individually draws your eye across. For that reason a big breasted woman should not have any of these lines just across the bust as it will draw even more attention to your chest. Conversely, for a lady with a smaller bust. It is a great idea.

The pale blue coloured garment above right is described as a layered silk blouse whereas the coral coloured number is described as a cami top. Generally the tiers are horizontal but when they are more vertical they can be very unique.

The most common example is the horizontal tiers. It can be a simple single tier or a number of layers. A very popular style is a horizontal layer at the hem. Useful for Rectangle and Inverted Triangle body shapes.

Further examples of a low hem tier. Effortlessly chic with a flowing loose style. Interestingly it is described as a 'double layer' top, which is another name for this style.

Note the difference between two different round neck styles. Team with a skirt or pants / slacks. You can wear it beneath a jacket or by itself. It can be worn for work or casually.

This sub-section deals with layers that are very deliberately asymmetric. The Seraphine Kathleen item on the left above is actually a maternity top. Which just goes to show howm much maternity wear has improved in the last two decades.

The Julipa item is a Joana Hope three quarter length sleeve, colour block, shaped front hem tunic top.

You can use simple monochrome colour schemes or a combination of colours.

On the right is a chiffon sleevless separate from Kaliko which actually has an interesting open vent at the back. Wear it over jeans for a very smart casual look.

(2) Layered Tops - The Illusion of Two Garments

The other main version of layered tops for women are the garments that have two pieces within one; or more often, that give the illusion of two garments but which are actually just the one.

A really simple example of this is a t shirt with different coloured arms, possibly of a different type of material, sewn in as modelled by Jessica Biel in the right hand column.

It can also be a blouse with a white placket sewn behind the neckline, at the ends of the sleeves, or at the bottom on the hemline. It might have two or three of these elements. Simply put, it gives the impression of another layer beneath.

The above two examples I found on Amazon. The example on the left is a simple floral print, double layer tank top.

The example on the right mixes a knit top with a chiffon under layer.

The Benefits of Layering

It is useful to re-iterate the main three benefits of layering.

  1. You can add different colours as a contrast or as a different tone or shade
  2. You can add a different texture, to provide interest
  3. You can use it to add length or change the emphasis of your body shape

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Are layered tops good for big busts? If done well, combining dark colours, I think it can work very well.

As you can see, this look can be created relatively easily.
