Shirts for big boobs

Shirts for big boobs that fit well are never easy to find. There are plenty of tops available however many do not provide a decent fit and can make you look like either a bag lady, or porn star.

The lack of decent well fitting shirts for big boobs, or even big bust blouses, is a real nuisance because whilst we can wear dresses with flattering necklines, shirts are very versatile and can be worn informally with jeans or slacks; semi formally at work; or more formally with a skirt or trouser (pants) suit so we need them as part of our wardrobe.

This section looks at the problems with these tops for women, the particular issues to watch out for and provides some solutions. I will use the term shirt or blouse interchangeably here as the problem effects them both. I am primarily discussing traditional button down shirts for big boobs.

I also have to state up front, so to speak, that I have a personal bias here. I was so disappointed with the availability of well fitting shirts for ladies with big boobs that I decided to design and sell my own small range of white shirts - see the article on Bounteous in the right hand column.

The Problem With Badly Fitting Tops
For Big Busts

The main two issues in tops for big busts are that the top is either too tight or too loose. It is common for most of us to find a

Look familiar? The awful gape an unwelcome feature for any busty lady

shirt that fits well around the torso but your boobs burst out or over the top, or a blouse that shapes beautifully around your bust but flaps around your stomach.

Why is this? Well simply because the clothing industry tends to take a one size fits all attitude. That means if you are a size 8, or 14 for example, it is assumed you are that standard size all over. With ladies who are 'normal' sized, who just happen to have large busts, this is clearly a problem.

The result is either buttons that look like they will pop off under the strain; a gaping hole between the buttons men will stare at; or ugly creases emanating out from the buttons which only highlights the strain they are under.

You do not want to wear swathes of material around the upper chest to try and hide the problem, as any detail will only draw the eye and that extra bulk will make your boobs look even larger.

Big shapeless shirts can hide that chest but can also make you look shapeless
A top that 'hangs' down from your boobs may only make you look fat

It is a marginally better option to choose a top that fits across the boobs and hangs loose below because at least it does not highlight that large bust but it can potentially make you look shapeless or worse, fat.

The slim but busty 'Just Shoot Me!' actress Laura San Giacomo demonstrates the problem above left.

Fitted Shirts for Big Boobs

A well fitting shirt is a staple for any woman's wardrobe as it can be worn with so many outfits

Look for a tailored shirt, one that offers room in the chest, but hugs the torso. Easier said than done for a busty girl I hear you say! But it gets a lot easier when you know what to look for and what to avoid when you are looking for a shirt for large breasts.

As you can tell from the above photo there is help at hand. Thanks to the rise of the internet there are a few boutique retailers that specialise in shirts for big boobs (including my own - shameless plug).

Classic Shirts for Busty Women

The benefit of such clothes is that they are fitted specifically for busty women. There is extra material in the places you need it, with darts and seams to provide a fitted look. They are cinched in, in all the right places, so that you get a flattering, tailored look, without any unseemly or immodest problems.

If it fits so well you can wear it a lot, it is well worth spending a little bit more as the simple economics prove

Like most fitted clothes, they usually cost more than off the peg shirts from the standard retailers but it is best to look at it from the viewpoint of how many times you will wear it and the inestimable value of wearing something you know you look good in.

If you wear this once a week at work, what is it's 'real' value compared to the price of a dress you will buy for a party, then not wear very often because it has been 'seen'. People do not remember plain white shirts, even less so when you combine them with a variety of other things.

A good fitted shirt for big boobs can become a staple garment in your wardrobe and worn or accessorised with a variety of skirts, pants, trousers or jeans. You can wear sweaters, cardigans or jackets over it. Nice necklaces or scarves can also jazz up the look with minimal effort.

Shirt Length

Perhaps not the most obvious initial issue on a page discussing shirts for big boobs but another feature to watch out for is length. As I have said elsewhere, forget what you tell him, length matters!

A longer line shirt has many advantages not least, lengthening your torso

A longer line will automatically draw the eye down and promote a suggestion of length, not width. It elongates your torso, makes your waist seem smaller and balances out those boobs. A longer 'shirt-tail' will also normally sit on a more flattering part of your hips. Remember you can always tuck it in.

Short shirts do the opposite. By reducing the gap between bust and hips you look more boxy and that piles on the pounds. Whilst the primary focus in a discussion of shirts for big boobs is the bust, you do not want to lose sight of promoting a womanly figure.

A simple test is, can you raise your arms out wide without your top riding up to reveal your stomach?

Shirts for Big Boobs - Features to Avoid

I have discussed the problems of a short top above, other features to avoid are:

  • short sleeves that stop at the same height as your bust. To read more click the link.
  • Shiny materials, satin and silk may look and feel nice but they reflect the light and will draw the eye to the most prominent part - your bust. Of course they are a possibility for evening wear but simply be aware of the issues.
  • Another simple issue is to avoid breast pockets. Traditionally manufacturers put them in to provide a bit of detail and the extra layer of material at the level of the bust camouflaged any bra colour or lace that might be showing through. Fine for ladies with modest busts but it is a detail than can draw the eye, so is best avoided when buying shirts for big boobs.
  • 100% cotton. I know that sounds like sacrilege but a small element of spandex / elastene makes a world of difference. It gives the shirt an element of 'give' so that it can expand a little where needed. It also makes it easier to iron!

Solutions For a Badly Fitting Blouse

Blouses for large breasts are equally difficult to find. If you have a favourite blouse that you know does not fit well but you are loathe to bin it there are a few solutions:

  • The best, but again, the most expensive, solution is to find a tailor or seamstress to get it professionally altered. The cost will be less than a new garment and the benefit of having an item that really fits well cannot be under-estimated. Of course if you are handy with a needle yourself then even better. Try it out on one garment first and see what you think of the results.
  • A possible solution to the gaping problem is 'magic' tape. They come in different guises but are often effectively double sided sticky tape, devised specifically for this problem. An admittedly temporary solution but relatively cheap. I post a link to these in Amazon, in the right hand column, if you are interested.
  • The other temporary answer is the old fashioned safety pin. They can be fiddly to attach in tight places and I never seemed able to do it without some metalwork showing but they can solve a problem. I would however caution against their use on silk or satin as the process involves puncturing the material with the pin. Not ideal but in a crisis.....
  • Not a solution for gaping but if your shirt is too short, it is a simple exercise, which will probably not cost you a thing to try layering. Combine it with a longer camisole, or even a tee shirt or vest to create a longer line. Alternatively use exterior layering by adding a cardigan, sweater or jacket on top.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

News update:

Just been reading about Virgin Airways cabin crew complaining about the new uniform shirts thay have been given / had imposed upon them.

Too tight, too sheer - sound familiar? It must be bad enough for these ladies being stared at as they walk up and down the aisles and this certainly will not help.

A typical button down shirt for women and a disaster waiting to happen for the ample chested

Here is a typical womens button down shirt. Perfect for modest busts. Normally a disaster area waiting to happen, for big busted women.

Bounteous

White shirts are a staple of most womens wardrobes as they are an almost essential garment in many working environments and can be combined to great effect with so many other pieces on both formal and informal occasions.

I was so frustrated with the lack of good quality shirts that catered for big busted women that I decided to design and sell my own. Hence Bounteous was born. An internet shirt retailer specifically providing tops for big boobs.

Click on the advert to go to the Bounteous website

The sizes are (UK) 8 - 16 and come in 4 different cup sizes, ranging from DD - J and shipping worldwide is available.

The design objective was to create a classic shirt that both fitted and flattered ladies with big boobs; was modest so that there would be no gaping; and had darts and seams in all the right places.

I wanted a high quality garment, partly because there was no point in even trying to compete with the cheap Chinese mass produced shirts, but also because I wanted a product that I was happy to put my name to.

Please Spread the Word

If you are particularly interested in fashion; clothes for big breasts; or simply have a top heavy friend that you know might appreciate the site; please help me reach others by tweeting or sharing through any social media you use.

Nothing helps a site like this more than 'normal' people (not clever marketeers) simply sharing a page or two.
