The Straight Body Type

The straight body type woman has a number of names to conjure with: the rectangular body shape; brick shaped; or the athletic figure. All prove that the whole concept of female body types is a bit muddled.

Kim Cattrall a Master of style

However one undeniable truth is that the essence of style is wearing clothing that suits your rectangular body shape.

This is the third in a series of articles on the straight body shape and again I use examples provided by some of the women who are masters in the art, like Kim Cattrall.

Unlike the two pages above, this page concentrates on the most flattering skirts and best dresses for a straight body type.

Empire Line Dresses

I know that for many an empire line dress conjures up images of slightly dowdy Jane Austen characters, standing aloof and with the wind ruffling their dress in the breeze.

Indeed, opposite is the very dress worn by Emma Thompson in the movie Sense and Sensibility.

Sense & Sensibility Empire Line DressThey were once dowdy

However, empire line dresses do not have to be frumpy. Take a look at this selection and see what can be done with a modern twist on an empire line, for a lady with a rectangle shape. To demonstrate the concept I have pinched a number of photos from Amazon.com. I have no idea of the quality or whether these frocks fit big busted women but they are cheap!

As can be seen, the essence of an empire line dress is that it falls away from a line below the bust. This is probably best when it is three or four inches below the bottom of the bust, as this is where many women's waist line is.

Skirts That Work Well

If you are a straight body type, you probably have slim hips and can wear pencil skirts but I recommend you wear styles that add curves to your hips. Tulip Skirts / dresses work well.

As do flared skirts / dresses. Note how good they look when cinched in at the waist.

Of course, A-line skirts are also a really good idea too. All of the skirts shown are perfect illustrations of how you can simply create an illusion of a curvier shape in a really simple way. As anaside, these two ads have models that move - I think that is so clever!

You will note that the best example always define but have little or no fuss at the waistline.

By all means highlight your waist with a band, pattern or belt but do not add details which will give an illusion of bulk at the waist. This is a wonderful cheat. A simple harmless way to create curves to balance out a big chest, or 'hide' big hips or thighs. I love it!

Proof That It Works!

It is never easy to provide proof that these style tips work but here are two examples of a type of 'before and after', or 'with and without' using rectangular shaped celebrities.

It is a little unfair to use the following two ladies, particularly in skimpy outfits, but hey if I looked that good in a bikini I am not sure I would complain.

First up, Geri Halliwell of Spice Girls fame:

As you can see from the bikini shot, Geri is clearly a straight body type but you would not think so from the photo on the right with that flared skirt.

A photo of Kim Cattrall in a Police Academy movie, show she is a rectangular body shape and yet when she dresses off screen she looks far curvier with a pinched waist and tulip shaped dress.

The reason I use photos of these two ladies is because they are absolute masters in dressing the rectangle shape figure.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

Rectangular Shaped Celebrities

We can learn a lot from well dressed rectangular shaped celebrities.

Gwyneth Paltrow understands how to subtly give the impression of curvy hips with this flared 'skirt'.

Straight body shape? Emphasise those curvesRosario Dawson

Likewise Rosario Dawson emphasises her boobs in a shiny top and her hips in a tulip skirt to create the impression of big curves.

Money may buy women many things but not the knowledge of how to best dress their figures. Credit to these ladies for 'getting it'.

Style guru Kim CattrallKim Cattrall

I always like to show Kim Cattrall as she is a style guru for the straight body type. Here she wears an illusion or colour block dress to 'create' curves.
