Summer Maxi Dresses

Summer Maxi dresses are a wonderful alternative to the colourful knee length frocks we commonly associate with warm weather.

They became popular in the Seventies but tended to be nasty nylon and polyester frump fests.

Nowadays they are usually cotton, jersey or other light materials and both look and feel altogether better.

Below I explain what it is and the 10 major advantages of maxi dresses; from summer party dresses to casual chic. Plus lots of photographic examples showing the many neckline styles and variations, and some tips to titillate your taste buds and give you ideas.

What Is A Maxi Dress?

There is no formal definition of summer maxi dresses but simply put they are long, floor or ankle length garments. Generally they are shaped at the top and long and flowing below. Many of these gown have banded waistbands to emphasise the stomach. They are also almost always sleeveless.

Being that it is warm weather wear (don't you just love alliteration), these garments are usually light, floaty fabrics.

Get Colourful

Go Monochrome

'Gypsy' style from Blue Banana

Part of the joy of Summer is that it gives us the opportunity to wear colourful floral designs. This one is deliberately bold. In contrast the classic simplicity of a monochrome gown with a drawstring waist. Please also see the page on Summer party dresses.

Silhouette

Polka Dots

The v neck, two tone silhouette dress can be worn casually or formally. It has a dramatic floor sweeping length and a keyhole detail at the base of the neck at the back.

The sleeveless polka dot dress is cotton and perfect for casual or the beach.

Ten Advantages of Maxi Dresses?

  1. They are light and comfortable and when it gets hot, that is a real plus point
  2. You can wear them with heels, wedges, sandals, or flip flops (thongs for you Aussies)
  3. They can be worn as formal summer party dresses and glammed up with a bit of statement jewellery or for simple casual needs like the beach, or a back garden barbeque
  4. Maxi dresses cover up milky white legs until you can get a tan
  5. If you have not had time to shave your legs, no worries, they will not be seen anyway
  6. Often times they can be rolled up tight so you can take a selection in your suitcase on holiday
  7. If you are visiting a church or cathedral on holiday, or even just a restaurant or shopping mall; you have instant modesty with both your legs and often your shoulders covered
  8. The long lines elongate, so the emphasis is on length, not width which many ladies, not just the busty sisterhood, will love
  9. If you are worried or embarrassed about blemishes, scars or prominent veins on your legs, summer maxi dresses are a godsend
  10. On cool evenings you have a bit of covering to ward off the cold and / or cover up your goose bumps. Plus even if the wind does pick up, it would have to be almost gale force for it to be able to lift up the dress sufficient to show your undies

Various Neckline Styles

Scoop Neck

Blue Banana - Scoop Neck Maxi Dress

The V neck suits almost everyone but particularly ladies with large chests. A deep round neck or scoop neck also works really well. Note the large straps (on the right) which can hide the wide straps you get on large cup bras.

Strapless

Halterneck

Maxi from Blue Banana

If you have a good strapless bra, then the strapless and halter-neck look can work really well as there is a lot of (modest) naked flesh going on, to distract the eye from that bust.

I have to say I like the line of halter-necks on summer maxi dresses. However, ladies who are concerned about broad shoulders should treat this neckline with extreme caution.

Short Sleeve

Criss-Cross

Spaghetti straps look very pretty but are often impractical for ladies with bounteous boobage. You could always use a strapless bra but check how low the sides and back of your Summer maxi dress dip, otherwise you may well find yourself flashing your bra.

On the right is a good example of a criss-cross style with lovely drape detail, a V neck and ruching which works well for large busts.

Tips for Summer Maxi Dresses

  • Take time to make a good job of painting your toenails. This is one of the few occasions when your toes may well be on show, so no quick 'that will do' jobs
  • 'Long' earrings will mirror the long lines
  • They often scream out for a nice necklace, so it is your chance to wear something pleasing to the eye
  • If it is slightly too long - get the sewing machine out, or a quick trip to a local seamstress (I also find many local dry cleaners offer this service)
  • They team up wonderfully with jackets, particularly denim jackets
  • Monochrome colours will take a long time to go out of fashion, whereas you might look at a patterned dress a couple of years later and question what on earth you were thinking

Boho chic, or dress down cool, this look is certainly popular with younger women. It is also interesting to see summer maxi dresses teamed up with old style baseball shoes and ankle boots.

Silk

Perhaps splash the cash on something a little more exotic?

Okay clearly you are not going to buy a little chiffon or silk number for the beach but if you have formal occasion these are great summer party dresses. Note the flattering round neckline and belt on the green gown. Also the inner jersey lining which is above the knee.

What If I am Not Tall?

Generally summer maxi dresses suit all shapes and sizes but many shorter ladies find they can get lost in them and possibly worse, make them look even shorter.

Many stylists recommend empire line styles. My 3 x extra tips would be:

  1. low necklines; V or scoopnecks are plentiful and more modest flesh on show reduces the impact of all that fabric
  2. sleeveless; two long lines of naked flesh will draw the eyes up and down
  3. side slits: to again flash some (modest) flesh and promote a vertical lines look

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan
