Turtlenecks For Big Busts?

So are turtlenecks for big busts a good idea? I personally would say no and would respectfully suggest that it is a definite contender for the 'what not to wear for busty women' trophy; but everyone is different and you have every right to think I am talking nonsense.

Living in the UK I did not realise that this style was called a different name in America and different again in Australia. There is even the additional term, 'mock turtle'.

It is variously called a:

  • turtleneck
  • polo neck
  • skivvy
  • rollneck

However, it makes no difference what you call them because these collars be they short, long, turned over, rolled or whatever, are all necklines to avoid if you have large boobs, either on a sweater, or dress.

Why? because they involve a big expanse of material with no break. There is nothing to draw the eye away from your chest so it just sits there looking mountainous.

When they wanted to promote the U.S. show Don't Shoot Me, the publicists used plenty of photos of the undoubtedly busty Laura San Giacomo in a tight turtleneck and it certainly worked.  Indeed Laura spent almost every other episode bursting out of a variation on this theme.

There Is No Denying the Eye Popping Effect of a Polo Neck

Similarly the American / Hispanic news reader Elita Loresco knows exactly what she is doing in her mock turtle below. Coupled with dark pants or a skirt beneath only emphasizes the issue.

A tight top works every time

Of course if you are stacked and want plenty of attention, the polo neck will almost guarantee it. Wearing horizontal stripes is also a good move if that is your intent. Just remember, this website is primarily all about the polar opposite, ie learning how to tone down the size of your chest and providing suggestions as to what not to wear for busty women.

The best military strategists always teach us to know your enemy and keep him close. It is just that in this case, stick with simply knowing the turtleneck is your enemy, do not keep it close.

You will note in these photos that the young ladies' necks have disappeared. Any design that shrouds the elegance or lengthening properties of your neck, should be consigned to a bin and never see the light of day again.

Be aware, when you lose your neck, you are in danger of looking like your head is just sitting there on top of your breasts. The neck is one of the most misunderstood and under valued assets and you should not want to lose it's simple elegant charm.

The turtle-neck will focus attention on your bust

For busty women in particular, we want necklines that are low enough to break up the expanse of chest and have flesh tones leading up to and framing the face.

Such necklines take the eye up and away from your chest. Try the V neckline if you want a contrast with something that suits.

...But I Love Turtlenecks

Of course like most things in fashion, there are exceptions. I have seen an excellent example of a woman wearing a white polo neck under a black V neck jacket which worked well.

So do not consign every mock turtleneck to the bin, see if you can work with it.

Equally many big busted women like these tops in cold weather. If you want to wear them may I suggest you wear fine guage, rather than chunky, wool / fabric; you wear a jacket with a V neckline; or you accessorize with necklaces or a scarf.

It is a bit like slimming, where you can actually eat almost anything as long as it is in moderation. With clothes, you can wear almost anything too, you just need to be aware of the dangers and how to shift unwanted attention elsewhere.

As you can see from this brief selection of polonecks I found on the Amazon site, there is plenty of variation. You can wear them long, with three quarter or short sleeve, there is cable knit or smooth knit, different depth collars and a variety of colours and prices.

We tend to associate turtleneck or poloneck styles with sweaters but you can also find them on dresses. As you can see from the pictures above, you can either go for tight and body hugging or a more flowing look.

Either way, there is nowhere for your boobs to hide but if you do not mind that, then they can be an interesting alternative.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

The main problem with turtlenecks for big busts is that there is nothing to break up the feeling of bulk.

Actually the pattern on the example below does help it slightly and makes it a better option than a plain knit but I hope you see the problem.

Do Big boobs suit mock turtles?

Put another way, if you are proud of your boobs and want to make an impact, then this is a fabulous means to do it.

This page suggests that this style comes under the what not to wear for busty women category but if you like this look and are proud of your figure then the above polo neck is on Amazon and comes in something like 9 colours which should cater for most tastes.

Miss Kardashian knows how to catch the eye of the paparazzi

To be fair to Miss Kardashian, she knows exactly what the effect a mock turtle has. She is immensely proud of her boobs and wants the attention.

But do you want that attention?

Are turtlenecks a good look?

A well established and useful neckline; just not for any big busted woman.....unless you enjoy the attention.

There is nowhere to hide in a turtleneck sweater
