What Not To Wear For Big Busts

What not to wear for big busts is possibly self explanatory. There are some styles, clothes and fashions that really do not suit big busted women. I do not like to dwell on negatives but sometimes we all need the old fashioned blunt advice our mothers would provide.

I am not moralising or body shaming here. I am simply trying to give advice on what I consider a busty lady should avoid if she herself wishes to avoid even more attention than she will already receive.

Of course all views on fashion and style are subjective and if you really like to wear something I discourage, then that is absolutely fine. Wear what you are happiest in - that is the key.

If you are rushed for time please pick from the gallery below - simply click the photo. Below I deal with the worst offenders for drawing unnecessary attention to that chest. As we all know you can make some great style choices and then ruin it with one glaring error. These are those styles mistakes. Be warned, it is going to get ugly!

As women we generally like a little attention, but as women with large breasts know, you can have (far) too much. You therefore need to be very much aware of what not to wear for big busts, as you do not want to bring even more unnecessary attention.

I am by nature an optimist and throughout the site I discuss positives. Subtle changes you can make and styles you can wear to de-emphasize your chest and improve your look. But not here. Oh no. This is where we talk dirty. This is the big bust house of horrors.

To read more detail, simply click on the individual link. Remember always that you can of course wear what you want. If you disagree with me, or like to wear some of these styles, then go for it.

A very real danger is 'hiding' big breasts beneath a baggy top

Loose Shirts

Probably the easiest trap to fall into - loose shirts. You are embarrassed about the size of your breasts and think a nice loose top will hide those curves. The logic is sound, the only problem is that you can end up looking like a bag lady.

A classic boxy jacket

The Boxy Jacket

This can be the case for a lot of jackets, shirts and tops. Yes it might hide your boobs but losing any semblance of femininity is not the answer. The problem with boxy jackets is that they suggests bulk and bulk is not a phrase a large breasted woman wants to be associated with.

If it catches the light it will draw attention; fine if you are a movie star on a red carpet but do you want the attention on your chest?

Shiny Materials

This seems to be one of those areas where big busted ladies make all the right decisions about an outfit and then can spoil it all by using a shiny material. One of the classic bad styles for big boobs. Why?

Because Shiny equates to eye catching. You do not want your breasts to be eye catching so use caution with sparkly tops and satin dresses.

There is far more to this subject than a simple view that horizontal stripes make you look fat

Striped Dresses

More specifically horizontal striped dresses and tops.

Conventional wisdom is that horizontal stripes have a broadening effect. Logically a big boobed woman might not wish to highlight her bust any more by wearing horizontal stripes. There are however lots of anomalies and contradictions which means that this subject is not that simple.

There is also a scientific study on this issue which I have summarised, which is a very interesting read.

A lovely look, but just not for the heavy chested brigade

The Portrait Neckline

The portrait neckline is a classic and very nice neckline on the right body shape. Just not you dear reader. It is similar in style to the Boat neck, the Sabrina and the Off The Shoulder styles, so I briefly discuss those as well to distinguish the differences.

Dreadful pun warning: Dare to take the plunge?

The Plunging Neckline

The plunging neck is dramatic but can be dangerous for busty women and so is another natural contender for the bad styles for big boobs awards. It is generally not a good choice for women with large breasts unless you want a lot of attention centred directly on your chest.

Many women love the turtleneck but you need to know the dangers

The Turtleneck or Polo Neck

Variously called a turtleneck, polo neck, skivvy or rollneck. There is even the additional term, 'mock turtle'.

It makes no difference what you call them because these collars be they short, long, turned over, rolled or whatever, are all necklines to avoid if you have large boobs, either on a sweater, or dress.

As you can see a high neck does nothing to draw the attention from a heavy bust

The Crew Neck and Boat Neck

Two more poor choices of neckline for a busty woman are the crewneck and boatneck. Why? Simply because they are high necklines and present a huge swathe of material beneath which makes that area look wider. There is no distraction from those big boobs and the word 'wide' alone should set off warning lights in itself.

Thin straps will not hide bra straps and bra straps mean bra, which means boobs, which means 'let's look' and you have unnecessarily brought attention to yourself

Thin Straps

Thin straps mean either your bra shows or you go strapless, neither are ideal. There are plenty of tops without thin straps so you do have a choice of what not to wear for big busts.

Yes I know it is not a jacket but it illustrates the issue perfectly

Short Sleeve Jackets and Tops

I should be more specific. Short sleeves that stop in line with your bust on jackets, shirts, blouses or any top. The eye will draw a line from one sleeve to the other across your bust. A less obvious but clear member of the bad styles for big boobs brigade.

It is a seemingly innocuous issue and a simple mistake to make but equally a simple issue to rectify; so check out the page on short sleeve jackets.

Sometimes it is obvious to everyone else that your bra does not fit

Badly Fitting Bra

A bra is arguable the most important item of clothing for a large breasted lady. A badly fitting bra will let you down, literally! Rather than show depressing pictures of boobs spillage and bad fits I simply direct you to a page on the best bras for big boobs

This lists all the features you should look for in a well fitting bra.

Yes it would be lovely to 'hang loose' but there are real dangers

Bra-less & Back-less

Obviously this depends on a lot of things, not least your age, your bust size, your breast shape and your bravery. However, you may want to know the downsides of going braless.

Some, but very few, seem to think your bra showing is ok - we discuss

Bra Flash

This maybe a bit pedantic but generally not a good look for a lady with a lot up top. It may be not as serious a mistake as others here but it can still draw unwanted attention. Some women care about the bra flash, others are indifferent, it really is a personal decision.

I also muse on the ironies of the VLP.

See-through tops and thin material can mean other get an eyeful; fabulous for some women but not if you are trying to de-emphasize that bust

See-Through

Not a good choice. Many of you would not dream of this anyway but in case you did, read this and understand the issues behind the concept. Transparent tops are certainly a potential high score in the 'what not to wear for big busts' stakes.

High Neck Dresses

This page discusses three very necklines; the jewel, the drawstring and the gathered. They all look great on ladies with modest boobage, unfortunately they do not look so good on women of more bounteous chest proportions. High neck dresses

"...It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled...." Sun Tzu (possibly the world's greatest military strategist).

Knowing your enemies, and ladies these are your enemies - is a massive step forward in self knowledge and confidence. Knowing what not to wear for big busts is as important as understanding what will look good on you.

Once you have finished, head back to the Home page, clothes for large busts.

Did you like this page, did you learn something, maybe it reinforced you own views? I want to give as much (hopefully helpful) advice to the busty sisterhood as I can.

Please remember, we are all different. You may like to wear certain clothes and styles which I am suggesting that you should not. That is your absolute right. Do what makes you feel good. This site undeniably goes for the more modest approach because I feel all busty ladies already know how to be more racy if they wish.

It would really help me improve the site profile if you would click the Facebook 'Like' button. Pretty please! Susan

As Donna Karan put it,

"Delete the negative and accentuate the positive"

However, first you need to identify the negatives so you will recognise what not to wear if you are big busted.

Clothes To Avoid If
You Are Busty

I do not know where to begin

Ok,when it comes to what not to wear if you have a big bust, some things are obvious.

This section deals with the things that may not be so obvious. Little details or styles that should be watched out for.

Shall we be kind and say it is a bold statement

I know most of you would not even dream of wearing something like this so I am going to concentrate on the more subtle errors we can easily make.

Oh and if you do like that neckline, you are basically looking at the wrong site as you will hate my advice.
